I knew about 3 years into my PhD program that I wasn’t going to be able to hack it as a research scientist. I also could not bring myself to get excited about the pursuit of a narrow slice of scientific research for the rest of my career. I gravitate towards understanding the big picture and dabbling in a broad range of knowledge in various subject areas. I also did things like spill radioactive materials and trekked them down the hallway and had a tendency to accidentally wipe out my cell cultures.
