Got a Plan?

If you read my previous post  you know I’m a big fan of plans and being flexible about them too.  As I see many  trainees prioritizing another experiment over spending an hour to plan for their career, I thought of writing a post about how  to create your plan instead of waiting till the last minute after realizing you don’t want to stay in academia.

Networking: you never know who you’ll end up meeting!

With the start of the fall semester at Penn, On-Campus Recruiting has also now swung into action. Various large firms come out here, giving informational talks (i.e. propaganda sessions) about their work and how to become one of the ‘elite’ who join them. The university also hosts a number of Career Fairs for different industry sectors, which big companies are eager to attend in order to dip into the pool of supersmart Penn students.

Another Successful Summit

A big thank you to all of you who participated in our second Virtual Job Summit in early April.  You made it a big success!  Our participating employers were pleased with the quality of the scientists they met. Thanks also to Coach Tom and Lauren Celano, who devoted their time to giving one on one advice to scientists who needed job search strategy, resume, and interview help.  These sessions were also a great success, judging by the comments of some jobseekers who availed themselves of these opportunities.

Spring 2012 Virtual Job Summit

For the past two months, Bio Careers members have been gearing up for the Spring 2012 Virtual Job Summit. As one of the most effective and creative resources Bio Careers provides, this biannual event brings together employers in academia, industry and other fields with life science postgraduate jobseekers. The inaugural event in 2011 was a tremendous success with over 600 scientists in attendance, and marked the first online job summit exclusively for life scientists.

Queuing at the Summit

One of the problems with last fall’s Job Summit that we heard back from you about was that some booths were terribly overcrowded, and it was hard to reach a recruiter even during their Office Hours. We heard you!For the Spring Summit, there will be a link at each booth to a sign up sheet.  You can place your name on the signup sheet any time between Feb 1st and the Office Hours on April 4th and 5th.  Recruiters will use the list to invite you to a one on one chat.

Video Interviews at the Job Summit

A number of you will meet recruiters at the Job Summit who find that your background matches well with their needs.  They will either want more time with you or to introduce you to their hiring manager (the line manager for whom you would work).
